Canal Park

Restaurants & dining in Canal Park, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Canal Park neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

No neighborhood in the region eats better per square foot, which is the whole point of the district.

Northern Waters Smokehaus in the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace at 394 Lake Avenue South is the one everybody names first: a smoked fish and meat counter turned sandwich shop, sourcing locally and smoking in house, with a line out the door most of the summer. Grandma's Saloon & Grill at 522 Lake Avenue South sits directly under the lift bridge and is the district's institution, an antique-crammed American pub that lends its name to the marathon that finishes outside.

Canal Park Brewing Company on Canal Park Drive is the neighborhood brewpub, with a patio facing the water and a rotating tap list. Vikre Distillery, beside the lift bridge, distills small-batch spirits with Lake Superior water and foraged Northwoods botanicals and runs a cocktail room and tours, which makes it the closest thing the district has to a destination bar rather than a tourist one.

Beyond those, Canal Park Drive carries a dense run of restaurants, cafes, and hotel dining that turns over more often than the anchors do, and the Lincoln Park Craft District is seven minutes west.

The honest caveat for a resident rather than a visitor: this is tourist-priced, tourist-paced dining, and in July you will wait. Locals learn which places are worth the summer line and which are better in February.
