The Central Hillside's dining is mostly downhill, and that is a genuine feature rather than a dodge: downtown's full range is an eight-minute walk down Second or Third Avenue, and downtown has more restaurants inside a few blocks than any other part of the region.
At the bottom of the hill, Duluth Coffee Company roasts and pours at 105 East Superior Street, Pizza Luce is the late-night anchor at 11 East Superior Street, Zeitgeist Arts Cafe pairs contemporary American cooking with a theater and a cinema at 222 East Superior Street, Blacklist Brewing runs its taproom at 206 East Superior Street, and India Palace and Hanabi cover the western end at 319 West Superior Street and 110 North 1st Avenue West. Carmody Irish Pub at 308 East Superior Street is a long-standing fixture, but its current operating status is not confirmed from a first-party source, so check before planning an evening around it.
Cross-slope is where the neighborhood eats without losing altitude, and it is worth learning that route. East along the 3rd and 4th Street corridors into the East Hillside are Positively 3rd Street Bakery at 1202 East 3rd Street, a worker-owned bakery, and Burrito Union at 1332 East 4th Street. Further east and downhill, Sir Benedict's Tavern on the Lake at 805 East Superior Street does sandwiches, a long tap list and live music, and Fitger's Brewhouse brews inside the old brewery complex at 600 East Superior Street.
What the neighborhood itself does not have is a dinner strip of its own. Central Hillside is residential and institutional, its main street carries a grocery rather than restaurants, and the eating happens at the bottom of the hill or one neighborhood over. At this price, with that much within a walk, it is a reasonable trade.
