Restaurants & dining in East Hillside, Duluth, Minnesota
Part of the East Hillside neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
East Hillside's eating is split between what is inside it, which is modest and walkable, and what is a mile downhill, which is the entire downtown range.
Inside the neighborhood, Positively 3rd Street Bakery at 1202 East 3rd Street is the genuine local institution, a worker-owned bakery on a cross-slope street that much of the neighborhood can reach on foot. Burrito Union at 1332 East 4th Street sits on the main cross-slope route in the eastern half.
At the foot of the hill, East Superior Street carries the rest. Sir Benedict's Tavern on the Lake at 805 East Superior Street does sandwiches, a long tap list and live music with a lake-facing patio. Va Bene Caffe at 734 East Superior Street does Italian cooking with a lake view. Fitger's Brewhouse brews inside the old brewery complex at 600 East Superior Street on the neighborhood's lower western corner, in a building that also holds a hotel, restaurants and shops.
Just over Chester Creek to the east, At Sara's Table Chester Creek Cafe at 1902 East 8th Street is the east side's farm-to-table anchor and an easy cross-slope walk from the eastern blocks. The Loch Cafe and Games at 318 North 18th Avenue East is nearby, though its current operating status is not confirmed from a first-party source, so check before going.
A mile downhill and west, downtown puts the region's fullest range within reach: Duluth Coffee Company, Pizza Luce, Zeitgeist, Blacklist Brewing and the rest. The walk down is pleasant and the walk back is the neighborhood's standing joke.
