Daily life here works better than the price band implies, for one specific reason and several general ones.
The specific reason is the Whole Foods Co-op's Hillside store at 610 East 4th Street, open daily 7am to 9pm (confirmed against the co-op's own site, 2026-08-14). It sits between Sixth and Seventh Avenue East, which puts it just inside East Hillside, and crucially it sits on the cross-slope street, so most of the neighborhood can walk there without climbing. A walkable full grocery at this price point is close to unheard of in Duluth. Super One on Central Entrance is the nearest larger supermarket at about two miles.
The general ones: the elementary school is inside the neighborhood, the bus runs along two cross-slope streets, downtown is six minutes by car for banking, the main library and professional services, and both hospital systems are about a mile west, which is very good medical access by any standard.
Hardware is the honest gap, with the nearest real options up on Miller Hill or east in Lakeside. Gas sits on London Road, East Superior Street and Central Entrance. Miller Hill covers big-box shopping at about nine minutes up and over the hill.
The pattern worth naming is that East Hillside covers the weekly shop and the school run on foot and everything else by a short drive. For a household that wants to run one car rather than two, that is a workable arrangement at a price almost nowhere else in Duluth offers.

Pharmacy is covered by the Essentia and St. Luke's campuses about a mile west and by chain counters on Central Entrance and London Road. Hardware is the gap, with the nearest real options up on Miller Hill or east in Lakeside. Gas sits on London Road, Superior Street and Central Entrance.
Where you shop and eat out
The Hillside's cross-slope main street, running the width of both Hillside neighborhoods. The Whole Foods Co-op sits on it at 610 East 4th Street, along with small shops and services and the East 4th Street bus. LISC Duluth names 4th Street first among the Hillside's commercial corridors.
The connector between the two Hillsides and one of the few avenues carrying commercial use as well as traffic, linking 4th Street down to Superior Street and up toward Skyline.
The two lower arterials at the foot of the neighborhood, carrying the Fitger's complex, restaurants and lakefront services, and forming the boundary with the East End.
Essentia Health and St. Luke's sit just west and below, at the Central Hillside's lower shoulder, within about a mile and among the region's largest employers.
Through the year
The course runs down Scenic Highway 61 and London Road, along the foot of this neighborhood, before finishing in Canal Park. East Hillside gets one of the best free viewing positions in the city and loses its lower arterial for the morning.
The annual community festival run by the Chester Bowl Improvement Club at the top of the creek gorge on the neighborhood's eastern edge.
The formal rose garden below the neighborhood is at its peak in midsummer and is a city-wide draw.
The free walk-through holiday lights village at Bayfront Festival Park, about a mile and a half southwest.
Daily life next door
West across Sixth or Seventh Avenue East, the other half of the Hillside: denser, cheaper, closer to downtown and the hospitals, and noisier.
