East Hillside is bracketed by green space at both ends of its slope, which is the best structural argument for buying here.
At the top, Skyline Parkway carries the ridge road, the Superior Hiking Trail's in-city section and access to the Duluth Traverse, the roughly 40-mile spine of a network exceeding 90 miles. Walking from a front door onto a long-distance hiking trail is a real possibility from the upper blocks.
At the eastern edge, Chester Park's roughly 60 acres of creek gorge carry waterfalls, hiking trails on both sides of the ravine, a sledding hill, cross-country skiing and the ground once used for Duluth's ski jumps. The Chester Bowl Improvement Club runs the ski hill with a chairlift and a chalet, plus summer camps and the annual Fall Fest, and confirmed on its own site in 2026 that all of it is operating. For the eastern blocks this is a back garden.
At the bottom, Leif Erikson Park and its formal rose garden sit on the shoreline at 1301 London Road, with an amphitheater and direct access to the Lakewalk, seven miles of paved shoreline running northeast to Brighton Beach and southwest into downtown and Canal Park.
Further afield but still close, Hartley Park's 660 acres of urban wilderness are about two and a half miles up the hill with the Hartley Nature Center at the trailhead, and Enger Park and its tower are about ten minutes west along Skyline.
Winter here is well served without a drive: sledding and Nordic skiing at Chester, fat biking on the Traverse, and a plowed Lakewalk at the bottom of the hill.
The City of Duluth parks listing renders in JavaScript and returns no park names to an automated fetch, so the smaller East Hillside parks, squares and recreation grounds could not be confirmed against the city roster on 2026-08-14 and are deliberately not named here. Verify against city GIS before adding them.
Winter: sledding at Chester Park, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing at Chester and Hartley, fat biking on the Duluth Traverse, Lakewalk winter walking below London Road, skating and hockey at the neighborhood rinks.
Water access: Lake Superior at the Lakewalk and the Leif Erikson Park shoreline, directly below the neighborhood; Chester Creek and its gorge along the eastern boundary; Duluth harbor and Bayfront, about a mile and a half southwest.

The in-city section of the SHT follows the ridge forming this neighborhood's upper boundary, so residents can walk from a front door onto a long-distance hiking trail.
