About Lake Place Park

Lake Place Park is the park built on the deck over Interstate 35 in downtown Duluth, and it is the single piece of infrastructure that keeps the freeway from cutting the city off from its own lakefront.

When I-35 was pushed through the downtown waterfront, the design response was to bury a section of it and build public space on top. The result is a plaza and overlook that connects downtown directly to the Lakewalk and the shoreline, with seating, public art, and one of the best free views of Lake Superior in the city. From here the Lakewalk runs southwest into Canal Park and northeast toward Leif Erikson Park and beyond.

For residents of Canal Park and the East End it is the everyday pedestrian link between the lakefront and downtown. For everyone else it is the place the postcards get taken from.
