About Skyline Parkway
Skyline Parkway is the ridge road that runs the length of Duluth, following the ancient shoreline of glacial Lake Duluth several hundred feet above the modern one. The City calls it one of Duluth's treasures, and it is the piece of designed landscape that best explains how the city works: lake at the bottom, hillside in the middle, plateau on top, and a road along the seam.
Driving it end to end takes you past overlooks of Lake Superior and the St. Louis River bay, Enger Park and its stone tower, Hawk Ridge and its fall raptor counts, and trailheads for the Superior Hiking Trail and most of the Duluth Traverse mountain bike network. Several neighborhoods sit directly on it, including Bayview Heights, where the parkway meets Vinland Street, Getchell Road, and Highland Street at the Bayview intersection.
Not all of it is paved and not all of it is open year round. West of Bayview Heights the parkway turns to gravel and runs out toward the old-growth maple at Magney-Snively, and several sections close to vehicles in winter, which turns them into ski, snowshoe, and fat-bike routes. The eastern end finishes at Seven Bridges Road above the Lester River.
