About The Lakewalk
The Lakewalk is Duluth's spine: roughly seven miles of paved shoreline path running from Canal Park northeast along Lake Superior to Brighton Beach. It is flat, car-free, and cleared through much of the winter, which makes it the one route in a famously vertical city that anybody can use in any season.
Functionally it is three different things at once. In Canal Park it is a tourist promenade. Through the East End and below Congdon Park it is a commuter and running corridor. Out past Lakeside and Lester Park it turns quiet and windswept and finishes at the cobble beach.
Storms have repeatedly torn up sections of the trail and the shoreline beneath it, and the city has been rebuilding in phases with heavier armoring, relocated alignments, and improved accessibility. Work continues on the segment between Endion Station and roughly 27th Avenue East, with construction that may extend into 2027 (City of Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). Check current closures before planning a long continuous run or ride.
