Local lore in East Hillside, Duluth, Minnesota

• The co-op is the anchor of both Hillsides. The Whole Foods Co-op at 610 East 4th Street sits just inside East Hillside on the boundary line, and it is the reason people from both neighborhoods walk east and west rather than driving up the hill.
• First Lutheran holds its summer Sunday services outdoors in Leif Erikson Park, down the hill at the bandshell. Hearing a congregation from the Lakewalk on an August morning is a local fixture.
• Chester Creek had ski jumps at the top of it. The terrain at the head of the gorge was Duluth's jumping ground, and the shape of the land still shows it.
• Some of the numbered avenues are stairways rather than streets. The grade beat the grid here as it did next door, and locals give directions by which stairway you take.
• Grandma's Marathon runs along the bottom of the neighborhood. The course comes down London Road, which makes the lower blocks one of the best free viewing positions in the city and makes the arterial unusable for a June morning.
• The Rose Garden is the neighborhood's front lawn. Most of the city treats Leif Erikson Park as a destination; from the lower blocks here it is a five-minute walk downhill.
• The eastern blocks cost more and the tract data proves it. Median owner-occupied value runs about $23,000 higher on the Chester Creek side than on the downtown side of the same neighborhood.
