Local lore in Chester Park, Duluth, Minnesota
Part of the Chester Park neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
- There is a ski hill with a chairlift inside the neighborhood. Chester Bowl runs lift-served skiing and snowboarding, youth programming through the winter and day camps in the summer, at the top of the creek gorge, minutes from the houses.
- The creek had ski jumps before it had a chairlift. The ground at the head of the gorge was Duluth's jumping site, and the shape of the terrain still shows it.
- The rent number confuses everyone. A median gross rent of $1,714 in a neighborhood with $261,900 houses looks wrong until you realise it is measuring whole houses let to student groups, not apartments.
- Fall Fest belongs to this neighborhood. The Chester Bowl Improvement Club runs it every September at the top of the gorge, and it is a neighborhood event rather than a city one.
- There are two creek gorges on the east side and locals are loyal to one. Chester is the western twin to Congdon Park's Tischer Creek: the same idea, the same era of park-making, a different creek and a rather less manicured feel.
- The cafe by the creek is the east side's institution. At Sara's Table Chester Creek Cafe at 1902 East 8th Street has been the farm-to-table anchor here for years, in a converted house beside the water.
- You can walk to two colleges. Over 12,000 students between UMD and St. Scholastica as of fall 2025, both at the top of the same hill.
