Woodland
Local lore in Woodland, Duluth, Minnesota
Part of the Woodland neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
- The neighborhood was born on a race day. When the Woodland streetcar line opened in 1892, it could not keep up with the roughly 2,500 people trying to get up the hill to watch the races.
- The streetcar that created Woodland stopped running in 1939. The corridor it established still determines where the shops, churches, and traffic are.
- Hartley Park is not near Woodland, it is in Woodland. Roughly 660 acres of it, with the trailhead on the neighborhood's main street.
- The Rock Knob overlook inside Hartley gives one of the best inland views in the city, out over the hill toward the lake, and most visitors from outside Duluth have never heard of it.
- Woodland Avenue carries three established congregations within about a mile and a half of each other: Woodland Community, Concordia Lutheran, and Glen Avon Presbyterian down in Hunter's Park.
- September changes the neighborhood. When the university term starts, the blocks nearest campus get measurably busier, and long-time residents time their errands accordingly.
