Woodland has a small commercial node at Woodland Avenue and Calvary Road with a handful of everyday businesses, but it is not a dining destination and nobody here pretends otherwise. Eating out means choosing a direction and driving five to fifteen minutes.
The nearest genuinely good option is downhill toward the campuses. At Sara's Table Chester Creek Cafe at 1902 East 8th Street is about six minutes away, a farm-to-table cafe and bakery near Chester Creek that has been the east side's reliable full-service restaurant for years and does breakfast through dinner. A little further down, Sir Benedict's Tavern on the Lake at 805 East Superior Street is about eleven minutes and covers the pub end: sandwiches, a deep tap list, live music, and a patio facing the water.
East along the shoreline, the Lakeside business block between 44th and 47th Avenue East is roughly fourteen minutes and rewards the trip. Amity Coffee anchors the mornings, Sammy's Pizza has been in the family since 1958, and Crank and Dasher handles ice cream. Lake Superior Brewing is a few minutes past that. For an occasion, the New Scenic Cafe on Highway 61 is about twenty-five minutes up the shore.
Woodland's compensating advantage is the university. Campus dining and downtown Duluth's full range are both within about eleven minutes, closer than from most of the east side.
