Hartley Park is the reason to live here. Roughly 660 acres of woods, ponds, rock outcrops, and trail sit inside the neighborhood, with the Hartley Nature Center on Woodland Avenue as the main trailhead (City of Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). It is large enough that you lose the sound of traffic within ten minutes of walking, which is a remarkable thing to say about a park you can reach on foot from your house.
Inside it, roughly a dozen miles of trail carry hiking, singletrack maintained as part of the Duluth Traverse system, and groomed cross-country ski routes through the winter. The Rock Knob overlook gives one of the better inland views over the city and the lake beyond. The nature center runs environmental education, day camps, school field trips, and volunteer stewardship, and is one of the most-used shared institutions on this side of Duluth.
Beyond Hartley, the W.R. Bagley Nature Area and its Rock Pond sit on the UMD campus edge as a shorter option, and Chester Park's creek gorge is a few minutes downhill, with Congdon Park past it toward the lake. The Superior Hiking Trail crosses the gorges just below the neighborhood.
Winter is when the geography pays off. The plateau holds snow when the lake-moderated shoreline blocks are bare, so Hartley's ski trails are reliably covered and the Traverse is groomed for fat bikes. What Woodland does not have is water: no lake frontage, no beach, and no walk to the Lakewalk.
