Hunter's Park

Parks & recreation in Hunter's Park, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Hunter's Park neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

This is the strongest nature access of any neighborhood in this guide that is not on the water. Hartley Park, roughly 660 acres of woods, ponds, rock outcrops, and trail, begins at the neighborhood's northern edge (City of Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). The Hartley Nature Center at the Woodland Avenue trailhead runs environmental education, camps, and trail information, and is one of the most-used shared institutions on this side of the city.

What is inside Hartley covers most of the year. Roughly a dozen miles of trail carry hiking, singletrack maintained as part of the Duluth Traverse, and groomed cross-country ski routes in winter, with the Rock Knob overlook giving one of the better inland views over the city and the lake beyond.

The W.R. Bagley Nature Area is the second option and the more everyday one, sitting on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus edge with Rock Pond at its center. Where Hartley is a deliberate outing, Bagley is a twenty-minute loop before dinner.

Downhill, Chester Park's 60 acres of creek gorge and Congdon Park's Tischer Creek corridor are both within a couple of miles, and the Superior Hiking Trail crosses both. Winter adds the Glen Avon rink on the old Hunter's Field, plus sledding at Chester and fat biking on the Traverse. What the neighborhood does not have is water access: no lake frontage, no beach, and no walk to the Lakewalk.

Winter: Nordic skiing at Hartley, outdoor ice at the Glen Avon rink, snowshoeing at Bagley, fat biking on the Duluth Traverse, sledding at Chester.
