About Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve
Hawk Ridge sits on the ridgeline above east Duluth, where Skyline Parkway runs along the top of the hill. Its reputation rests on geography: migrating raptors moving south along the Lake Superior shoreline will not cross the open water, so they funnel down the north shore and pass directly over this ridge in enormous numbers each autumn.
Counts run from late August into November, peaking in mid to late September when a north wind can push thousands of broad-winged hawks over in a single day. Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory staffs the main overlook through the season with counters and naturalists who identify birds aloud, answer questions, and run banding demonstrations and education programs.
Outside migration season the reserve is a quiet hiking and skiing area with some of the best views over the city, the harbor, and the lake. Parking along the parkway is limited and fills fast on peak count days; walking or biking up from the Lakeside and Lester Park side is a common local solution. Dress for the ridge, which is consistently colder and windier than the neighborhoods below.
