Kenwood is the one neighborhood in this guide where the parks are nearby rather than underfoot, and it is worth being straightforward about that. There is no Hartley inside the boundary, no creek gorge running through it, and no shoreline. What Kenwood has is short drives to all of them.
Hartley Park, roughly 660 acres with about a dozen miles of hiking, mountain bike, and groomed ski trail, is about five minutes east, with the Hartley Nature Center at the Woodland Avenue trailhead (City of Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). The W.R. Bagley Nature Area and its Rock Pond sit closer, on the UMD campus edge, and function as the nearest walking wood for eastern Kenwood. Chester Park's creek gorge and waterfalls are about seven minutes downhill, and Congdon Park is ten.
The Duluth Traverse mountain bike system and the Superior Hiking Trail's in-city section are both reachable within a short ride or drive, from Hartley on one side and Piedmont on the other.
Where Kenwood does better than its neighbors is everyday movement. Level ground means the neighborhood itself is walkable and rideable in a way the hillside districts are not, so the daily loop with a dog or a stroller happens on your own streets rather than requiring a trailhead. In winter, that same level ground is the difference between a walk and an expedition.
Winter: Nordic skiing at Hartley, snowshoeing at Bagley, fat biking on the Duluth Traverse, sledding at Chester.
Water access: Chester Creek and the Hartley ponds within a short drive. No Lake Superior frontage or view..
