Kenwood feels suburban in a way most of Duluth does not. The ground is level, the streets are regular, the lots are uniform, and the garages face the street. If you dropped someone here without telling them where they were, they would not guess a city built on a rock ridge above the largest freshwater lake in the world.
What that buys is ease. Sidewalks and driveways are flat, so winter is a matter of shoveling rather than of managing a slope. Errands are short. The shopping center gives the neighborhood a genuine center of gravity, and the parking lot functions as a de facto meeting point in the way a village main street does elsewhere.
A Saturday here is ordinary in the best sense: the grocery run, a coffee, kids on bikes on level pavement, and if the weather is good, a five-minute drive east to Hartley for the trails Kenwood does not have inside itself. Nightlife is essentially nonexistent, and downtown is ten minutes away when you want it.
The one thing residents notice that visitors do not is the airplanes. Duluth International is close, and on the western blocks the approach is audible. Locals stop registering it within a few months, which is either reassuring or a warning depending on your tolerance.
