About Hartley Park
Hartley Park is Duluth's urban wilderness: roughly 660 acres of woods, ponds, rock outcrops, and trail sitting above the hill in the Woodland neighborhood (City of Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). It is large enough that you can lose the sound of traffic inside ten minutes of walking, which is unusual for a park this close to the middle of a city.
The Hartley Nature Center anchors the main entrance on Woodland Avenue and runs environmental education programs, camps, and trail information. From there the network spreads across the park: singletrack maintained as part of the Duluth Traverse system, wider ski and snowshoe routes groomed through the winter, and footpaths climbing to the Rock Knob overlook, which gives one of the better inland views over the city and the lake beyond.
Hartley draws mountain bikers, trail runners, birders, and school groups in roughly equal measure. Parking fills on fall weekends. Trails are shared use, so expect to yield and to hear a bike before you see it on the faster descents.
