About W.R. Bagley Nature Area
The W.R. Bagley Nature Area is the smaller and quieter of the two woodland preserves that anchor Duluth's above-the-hill east side, the other being Hartley Park. It sits on the edge of the University of Minnesota Duluth campus and functions as both a student resource and a neighborhood walking wood for Hunter's Park, Woodland, and Kenwood.
Rock Pond is the centerpiece, with footpaths circling it and running out into mixed hardwood and conifer stands. The trails are used for teaching and research by the university, for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, and for the everyday dog walk the rest of the year.
Its value to the surrounding neighborhoods is proximity rather than scale. Where Hartley is 660 acres and takes a deliberate trip, Bagley is the twenty-minute loop you can do before dinner. Between the two, plus the Chester Creek corridor below, this part of the city has more walkable woods per block than anywhere else in Duluth.
