This is the strongest recreation offer in the guide outside Lester Park, and it is all within walking distance.
Chester Park itself runs about 60 acres of forest and creek gorge along the neighborhood's western boundary, with roughly three miles of trail on both sides of the ravine, a series of small waterfalls, sledding in winter and cross-country skiing. Footing is rocky and rooted and the gorge sides are steep enough to take seriously with small children.
Chester Bowl at the head of the gorge is the piece that makes this neighborhood unusual. The Chester Bowl Improvement Club runs the ski hill with a chairlift, alpine terrain and the Thom Storm Chalet, currently being renovated and expanded, plus winter youth programming, summer day camps running Monday to Thursday from June into August, a fall camp, and the annual Fall Fest each September. All of it was confirmed operating in 2026 from the club's own site.
At the top of the neighborhood, the W.R. Bagley Nature Area sits on the UMD campus edge with Rock Pond at its center, footpaths through mixed hardwood and conifer, and use for teaching and research as well as for the twenty-minute dog walk.
Beyond that, Skyline Parkway carries the ridge road, the Superior Hiking Trail's in-city section, and access to the Duluth Traverse, the roughly 40-mile spine of a network exceeding 90 miles, with the Chester Bowl trailhead among the most convenient entry points in the city. Hartley Park's 660 acres are under two miles up past the campuses. Congdon Park and its stone bridges are a mile and a half east. The Lakewalk is a mile downhill at Leif Erikson Park.

Follows the creek through the gorge on both sides, crossing at several points, past a run of small falls that are at their best in spring melt and after summer rain.
