Errands here work better than in most of east Duluth, and the reason is Mount Royal.
The Mount Royal shopping center on Woodland Avenue is about seven tenths of a mile up the hill and covers grocery, pharmacy, coffee and everyday retail. One honest caveat on the grocery: the obvious domain for Mount Royal Fine Foods is a parked for-sale page as of 2026-08-14, which is evidence that a domain lapsed and not evidence that a store closed, but it does mean this guide has not confirmed current hours from a first-party source. Confirm locally before relying on it.
The second option is the Whole Foods Co-op's Hillside store at 610 East 4th Street, about a mile and a quarter west along the cross-slope route, open daily 7am to 9pm and confirmed from the co-op's own site. Super One on Central Entrance is the nearest larger supermarket at about two and a half miles.
Medical is straightforward: Essentia and St. Luke's are both about eight minutes downhill, and the universities carry their own health services closer still. Banking, the main library and professional services are downtown at about eight minutes. Hardware is the honest gap, with the nearest independent option in Lakeside about four miles east and the big-box stores on Miller Hill about ten minutes.
The overall pattern is a neighborhood that covers the weekly shop and the school run without a long drive, has its recreation on the doorstep, and needs the car for hardware and big-box shopping.

Pharmacy, hardware & gas: Better than most of east Duluth. Hardware is the gap, with the nearest independent option in Lakeside about four miles east and the big-box stores on Miller Hill about ten minutes. Gas sits on Woodland Avenue and Kenwood Avenue up the hill and on London Road below.
Where you shop and eat out
The neighborhood's everyday commercial node, up at the Woodland Avenue corner: grocery, pharmacy, coffee and a handful of restaurants. It is the reason Chester Park does not have to drive to Miller Hill for the weekly shop.
The University of Minnesota Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica sit at the top of the neighborhood and are its largest employers and its dominant source of rental demand. Campus dining, events, arts and the UMD athletic facilities all sit within a walk of the upper blocks.
The cross-slope route west over Chester Creek reaches Burrito Union, Positively 3rd Street Bakery and the Whole Foods Co-op without losing altitude.
The two lakefront arterials about a mile downhill, carrying restaurants, services and the Fitger's complex, and connecting east toward Congdon and west into downtown.
Through the year
The annual community festival at the top of the creek gorge, run by the Chester Bowl Improvement Club. The neighborhood's own event.
The city ski hill runs lift-served skiing and snowboarding through the winter with youth programming, minutes from the surrounding houses.
The men's and women's Division I hockey teams play at AMSOIL Arena downtown, and the season shapes the social calendar in the blocks below the campus.
