This is the reason to buy in Piedmont, and it is a strong one.
The Piedmont trail system occupies the steep, rocky ground directly above the neighborhood, and it is the technical end of Duluth's mountain bike network: demanding descents, hillside climbs, and rock overlooks, on terrain that riders elsewhere in the Midwest simply do not have access to. It connects into the Duluth Traverse, the roughly 40-mile spine linking five main trail centers within a system exceeding 90 total miles, so a ride from here can run most of the length of the city (COGGS, accessed 2026-08-13).
The same ground carries hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling through the year, and the Superior Hiking Trail's in-city section runs the ridge above along Skyline Parkway.
East along Skyline, Enger Park holds the stone tower, the Japanese peace garden, hiking trails, and the golf course the city invested in after closing Lester Park's course in 2020. Downhill to the southeast, Lincoln Park's Miller Creek gorge offers a 1.2-mile trail and a waterfall.
Twelve minutes southwest is Spirit Mountain, with 22 downhill ski trails in winter and 12 lift-served downhill mountain bike trails in summer. Between the Piedmont singletrack, the Traverse, and Spirit Mountain, the west side's riding and skiing offer is the best in the city, and Piedmont sits in the middle of it.
What is missing is water. There is no lake frontage, no beach, and no Lakewalk access from here.
