Piedmont

Daily life in Piedmont, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Piedmont neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Errands here mean driving, and the neighborhood is straightforward about that. The nearest full grocery is about three miles, either at Miller Hill or in West Duluth, and neither is walkable from any part of Piedmont in any season.

Miller Hill, about eight minutes northeast, is the practical answer to most of it: grocery, pharmacy, hardware, big-box, the mall, and most chain services in one corridor. That is a shorter run than from most of the east-side neighborhoods in this guide.

Gas is on Piedmont Avenue and Central Entrance. For medical, Essentia Health and St. Luke's are both roughly ten minutes downtown-side, and the airport is ten minutes, which is a genuinely useful number for anyone who travels for work.

The Piedmont Avenue corridor handles small everyday needs but should not be mistaken for a business district. The neighborhood's own amenities are the trails, and everything else is a car trip.

Noise: Quiet residential. Traffic on Piedmont Avenue, some distant harbor and rail sound carrying up from the flats, occasional aircraft. No freeway noise on the upper blocks.
