Getting around Piedmont, Duluth, Minnesota

Piedmont's driving position is better than its reputation. Miller Hill retail and medical is about eight minutes northeast, Duluth International Airport about ten, downtown about ten, and Superior around sixteen. Piedmont Avenue is the spine, with Skyline Parkway along the ridge and Central Entrance and Hutchinson Road feeding northeast.

Six minutes downhill puts you in the Lincoln Park Craft District, which is a genuinely useful thing to have that close without living in it.

Cycling splits sharply. Off-road, this is among the best addresses in the city, with the trailhead at the top of the neighborhood. On-road, the grades are steep enough that utility cycling is impractical for most people, and every trip home is a serious climb.

Winter driving, honestly, is Piedmont's hardest fact. The grades here are among the most demanding in Duluth, and the neighborhood sits above the hill with no lake moderation, so snow arrives earlier and lies longer than on the shoreline. Duluth averages about 90 inches a season on the 1991 to 2020 normals (NWS Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). Piedmont Avenue is a plow priority; the residential streets that switchback above it are cleared afterward and hold ice in shaded corners into spring. Snow tires are not optional, all-wheel drive earns its keep, and a steep driveway is a real ongoing chore. The compensation is that the trails above the house get groomed while lower neighborhoods look at bare ground.

Biking: Among the best off-road access in the city: the Piedmont trails and the Duluth Traverse start at the neighborhood's upper edge. On-road riding is limited by the grades, which are steep enough to deter utility cycling.
