Duluth Heights

Getting around Duluth Heights, Minnesota

Part of the Duluth Heights neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Duluth Heights has the best all-round access in this guide, and it is not close. The Miller Hill corridor is essentially at the doorstep, about two minutes. Duluth International Airport is six. Downtown is ten. Superior is eighteen. Central Entrance, Miller Trunk Highway, Arrowhead Road, and Haines Road all feed the neighborhood, connecting north toward Hermantown and the Range, east across the plateau, and south down the hill.

For anyone who flies regularly for work, six minutes to the terminal is a genuine lifestyle difference. From Lester Park at the other end of the city the same trip is roughly twenty-three minutes.

Transit is likely better here than in most of Duluth given the retail concentration, which generates both riders and service.

Cycling is a mixed picture. The ground is level, which in Duluth is a substantial advantage, but the Miller Hill corridor is designed around cars and parking lots and is genuinely unpleasant to ride. The residential streets behind it are fine. Off-road riding means driving to Piedmont or Hartley.

Winter driving is the easiest in this guide. Duluth still averages about 90 inches a season on the 1991 to 2020 normals (NWS Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13), and the plateau holds snow longer than the lake-moderated shoreline, but the terrain changes what that means. There are no grades to ice over, no hillside driveways, and no climb home. The arterials are cleared early because the retail corridor depends on them. Snow tires remain sensible, but the Heights does not demand the vigilance that Piedmont, the East End, or Congdon Park do.

Biking: Level ground makes riding easy in principle, but the Miller Hill corridor is built for cars and is genuinely unpleasant on a bike. Off-road, Piedmont and Hartley are both a short drive.
