Getting around Denfeld, Duluth, Minnesota
Part of the Denfeld neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.
Denfeld's position is more central than its reputation suggests. Downtown is about twelve minutes, Miller Hill about twelve, Superior fifteen across the bridge, and the airport sixteen. I-35 runs along the neighborhood's lower edge, which is why those numbers are competitive and also why the lower blocks carry highway noise.
Grand Avenue and West Superior Street are the local arterials, connecting east toward Lincoln Park and downtown and west through Spirit Valley toward Gary-New Duluth and the river communities.
Transit needs verification, though West Superior Street and Grand Avenue are among the city's main corridors.
Cycling is genuinely practical here. The lower part of the neighborhood is flat, the Cross City Trail and Munger Trail connections give car-free routes along the western corridor, and the Piedmont trails are up the hill.
Winter driving is easier than in the hillside neighborhoods. The lower blocks are level, Grand Avenue is a plow priority, and while the streets climbing toward Skyline are steep, most of the neighborhood's housing sits below the difficult grades. Duluth averages about 90 inches a season on the 1991 to 2020 normals (NWS Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13), and West Duluth generally sees slightly less lake-effect than the east shoreline, though it is not a large difference.
Biking: The Duluth Cross City Trail and the Willard Munger State Trail connections run along the western corridor, giving flat car-free riding, and the Piedmont trails and Duluth Traverse are up the hill.
