About Spirit Mountain
Spirit Mountain is Duluth's ski hill, rising above the St. Louis River valley at the western end of the city. It carries 22 downhill ski trails in winter and converts to a lift-served bike park in summer with 12 downhill mountain bike trails (Wikipedia, accessed 2026-08-13), which makes it one of very few places in the Upper Midwest offering lift-accessed downhill riding.
For West Duluth neighborhoods, particularly Spirit Valley, Denfeld, and Bayview Heights, it is the defining recreational amenity and a genuine differentiator against the east side. An east-side household drives thirty minutes to ski here; a Spirit Valley household drives five.
Beyond the lifts, the hill hosts cross-country skiing, tubing, and events, and it anchors the western end of the Duluth Traverse mountain bike network, which runs from here across the length of the city.
It is worth noting that Spirit Mountain's finances and city subsidy have been a recurring subject of local debate, which is relevant context for anyone treating it as a permanent fixture.
Good to know: 22 downhill ski trails, 12 downhill mountain bike trails, lift-served bike park, snowboarding, tubing, cross-country skiing, Duluth Traverse trailhead, chalet and events.
