The Central Hillside's recreation story is vertical, and it is much better than the price suggests.
Skyline Parkway forms the neighborhood's upper boundary, and along it run two of the best pieces of trail infrastructure in Minnesota. The Superior Hiking Trail's in-city section follows this ridge, which means residents here can walk from their front door onto a long-distance hiking trail, something almost no American neighborhood at this price can claim. The Duluth Traverse, the roughly 40-mile spine of a network exceeding 90 miles, threads the same slope, with the Enger trail center at the top of the neighborhood.
Enger Park itself is the local crown jewel and it belongs to this side of the hill more than to anyone else. The stone tower gives the best panoramic view in Duluth over the harbor and the Aerial Lift Bridge, with a Japanese peace garden and a golf course alongside.
Downhill, Lake Place Park bridges the freeway and puts the Lakewalk within a walk: seven miles of paved shoreline running northeast to Brighton Beach and southwest into Canal Park, with Leif Erikson Park and its rose garden about a mile east. The walk down is pleasant and the walk back is training.
Northeast, Chester Park's roughly 60 acres of creek gorge, waterfalls, sledding hills and Nordic skiing are about a mile and a half across the slope. West across Mesaba, Lincoln Park's creek gorge and waterfall are under two miles.
Winter recreation here is mostly a matter of stepping outside. Sledding on the neighborhood's own grades is a local institution, skiing and snowshoeing are at Chester, and fat biking is on the Traverse at the top of the street.
The City of Duluth's parks listing renders in JavaScript and returns no park names to an automated fetch, so the smaller Hillside parks and recreation grounds could not be confirmed against the city roster on 2026-08-14 and are deliberately not named here. Verify against city GIS before adding them.
Winter: sledding on the hillside grades and at Chester, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing at Chester Park, fat biking on the Duluth Traverse at Enger, Lakewalk winter walking, downhill, Bentleyville at Bayfront in December.
Water access: Lake Superior at the Lakewalk, downhill through downtown and over the Lake Place Park freeway lid; Duluth harbor and the St. Louis River estuary at Bayfront, about a mile southwest; Chester Creek in the gorge northeast of the neighborhood.
Parks
The stone tower and gardens on the ridge directly above the neighborhood, reached up Skyline Parkway, with the best view in Duluth. It is Central Hillside's back garden more than it is anyone else's.
About 60 acres of creek gorge on the far side of the East Hillside, roughly a mile and a half northeast and the nearest genuinely wild ground.
The park on the deck over Interstate 35 at the foot of the hill, and the neighborhood's pedestrian route to the shoreline.

Trails
The in-city section of the SHT runs the ridge that forms this neighborhood's upper edge, which makes it the closest thing in Duluth to a long-distance trail you can reach on foot from your front door.
