Daily life here is better than the price band would lead you to expect, and the reason is one building.
The Whole Foods Co-op's Hillside store at 610 East 4th Street is a full grocery inside the neighborhood, open daily 7am to 9pm, and it sits on the cross-slope street so you can reach it without climbing (confirmed against the co-op's own site, 2026-08-14). Very few Duluth neighborhoods at this price have a walkable full grocery, and none of the cheap ones on the west side do. Super One on Central Entrance is the nearest larger supermarket at about a mile and a half.
Health care is exceptional and it is the neighborhood's other structural advantage. Essentia and St. Luke's both sit on the lower eastern shoulder, with Essentia's Vision Northland hospital completed in early 2023. For anyone working in health care, or managing regular appointments, walking distance to two hospital systems is worth a great deal, and it is a large part of the rental demand here.
Everything civic is downhill and close: the main library at 520 West Superior Street, banking, the county and city offices, the courts, and the transit hub. Pharmacy is covered by the medical campuses and by chain counters on Central Entrance.
Hardware is the honest gap, with the nearest real options up on Miller Hill or west in Lincoln Park and West Duluth. Gas sits on Mesaba Avenue, Central Entrance and Superior Street below. For big-box shopping, Miller Hill is about eight minutes up and over the hill, which is the shortest run to it from any neighborhood in this guide.

Where you shop and eat out
The Hillside's own main street and the reason this neighborhood works on foot at all: the Whole Foods Co-op, small shops and services, and the local bus route, running east to west across the slope rather than up and down it. LISC Duluth names 4th Street first among the neighborhood's commercial corridors.
The cross-slope connector between the two Hillsides and one of the few avenues that carries commercial use as well as traffic, linking 4th Street down to Superior Street and up toward Central Entrance.
Essentia Health and St. Luke's occupy the lower eastern shoulder of the neighborhood and are among the region's largest employers. Both have been expanding here, and Essentia's Vision Northland replacement hospital opened in 2023 at the foot of the hill.
Everything downtown is a walk downhill: restaurants, banks, the library, the transit hub, the courthouse and the theaters. It is the neighborhood's real commercial district, and the walk back up is the price.
Through the year
Concerts, recitals and events in the former cathedral at 201 West 4th Street, the neighborhood's main cultural draw.
Community events run by the memorial organization at East 1st Street and North 2nd Avenue East.
The free walk-through holiday lights village at Bayfront Festival Park, downhill and about a mile southwest.
The marathon finishes in Canal Park below the neighborhood, and race weekend closes a good deal of the ground between here and the water.
