Here is the gap that the walkability score hides. Canal Park is one of the most walkable places in Minnesota for eating, drinking, and recreation, and one of the least convenient for actual errands.
There is no grocery store in the district. No pharmacy counter. No hardware store. The weekly shop means driving or riding two to three miles, either up the hill toward the central Duluth stores or west along Superior Street, and there is no version of this that is a walk in February. Households here keep a stocked pantry and batch their errands, which is good Duluth practice anyway.
What is close is everything institutional. Downtown is three minutes for banking, the main library branch, and professional services. Essentia Health and St. Luke's are both about five minutes up the hill, the shortest hospital run in this guide. Miller Hill covers big-box retail at twelve minutes.
The district's own retail is galleries, outfitters, and specialty shops serving visitors, plus the stores inside DeWitt-Seitz. Not a substitute for a supermarket.
Groceries: Whole Foods Co-op, Denfeld or Hillside (2 mi), Super One Foods, central Duluth (2.5 mi).
Pharmacy, hardware & gas: None in the district. Canal Park has restaurants, hotels, galleries, and outfitters but no grocery, no pharmacy counter, and no hardware store. All three are two to three miles away up the hill or west along Superior Street. Gas is on Superior Street and at the freeway interchanges.
Where you shop and eat out
The main tourist and dining spine, running from the DECC southeast to the canal. Restaurants, hotels, galleries, and outfitters, almost all in converted or infill mixed-use buildings.
The working artery through the district, carrying traffic to the lift bridge and Park Point, with the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace and its shops and eateries at 394 Lake Avenue South.
Across Interstate 35 and connected by the skywalk system, downtown adds banking, offices, the main library, and the Fitger's complex to the north.
Through the year
The marathon starts near Two Harbors, runs down Scenic Highway 61 and London Road, and finishes in Canal Park. The district is effectively closed to normal life for the weekend.
