This is the only neighborhood in this guide where you can walk to dinner, and it changes the character of living here.
Sir Benedict's Tavern on the Lake at 805 East Superior Street is the neighborhood institution: a British-style pub doing sandwiches with a deep tap list, live music on a regular schedule, and a patio facing the water. It is the default for most of the East End and one of the few places in Duluth that functions as a genuine local. Up the hill at the Chester Creek corridor, At Sara's Table Chester Creek Cafe at 1902 East 8th Street does farm-to-table breakfast through dinner with a bakery attached, and has been the east side's reliable full-service restaurant for years.
Beyond those, the neighborhood's real advantage is proximity to two full dining districts. Downtown Duluth is five minutes or a walk from the western blocks and carries the widest range in the city. Canal Park, just past it at the ship canal, is the tourist and waterfront dining district. Between them, almost anything is within ten minutes without leaving the flat.
East along the shoreline, the Lakeside block is about ten minutes for Amity Coffee, Sammy's Pizza, Crank and Dasher, and Lake Superior Brewing a little further. For an occasion, the New Scenic Cafe on Highway 61 is roughly twenty-two minutes up the shore.
