The East End has the best access of any neighborhood in this guide. Downtown is about five minutes by car and walkable from the western blocks. Superior, Wisconsin is roughly twelve minutes, Miller Hill eleven, and the airport fifteen. I-35 runs below the neighborhood, which is the reason those numbers are so low and also the reason the lower western blocks hear it.
Transit is the strongest here too. The Superior Street and London Road corridors carry the city's most frequent service, and downtown is the hub of the DTA network.
Cycling is genuinely practical in one direction. The Lakewalk gives a flat, car-free commute into downtown, which no other neighborhood in this guide can match. Away from the shoreline, every trip is a climb, and the avenues are steep enough that most residents treat uphill riding as exercise rather than transport.
Winter driving, honestly, is this neighborhood's hardest fact. The avenues climbing from London Road toward East 4th Street and above are the steepest everyday grades in this guide, and they ice in freeze-thaw cycles and stay shaded by buildings. Duluth averages about 90 inches a season on the 1991 to 2020 normals (NWS Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). London Road and Superior Street are plow priorities and clear early; the residential avenues wait. Snow tires are not optional, front-wheel or all-wheel drive matters, and off-street parking on the uphill side is worth paying for. The compensation is that the Lakewalk and the flat lower blocks stay walkable all winter, so this is simultaneously the hardest neighborhood to drive in and one of the easiest to live in without driving.
Biking: The Lakewalk provides a flat, car-free spine straight into downtown, which makes this the most practical bike-commuting neighborhood in the guide. Everything above London Road is a climb.
