Smoked fish and meats, sandwiches, specialty market · 394 Lake Avenue South, Duluth, MN 55802 (DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace)
About Northern Waters Smokehaus
Northern Waters Smokehaus occupies a counter inside the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace at 394 Lake Avenue South, and it is the single most-recommended lunch in Duluth by a comfortable margin.
It started as a smoked fish and imported cheese operation and grew into a sandwich counter and specialty market. Everything is smoked in house over a blend of apple and maple hardwood, with fish and meats sourced locally and sustainably, and the sandwiches built on that smoked product are what the line out the door is for. The retail case still carries the fish, cheese, and charcuterie the place was founded on.
The building matters too: DeWitt-Seitz went up in 1909 as a mattress and furniture warehouse and factory, made things until 1983, and reopened as a marketplace in 1985, which is effectively where Canal Park's second life began.
Expect a wait in summer. Locals go in February.
Good to know: house-smoked fish and meats, sandwich counter, specialty market and cheese, local and sustainable sourcing, apple and maple hardwood smoking, takeout.
