South End (South Superior)

Restaurants & dining in South End (South Superior), Wisconsin

Part of the South End (South Superior) neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

The South End's own dining is taverns and the highway strip, and the city's better food is ten to twelve minutes north. That is the honest picture.

Along South Tower Avenue you will find the working neighborhood bars and small storefronts that have served this end of the city since it was a village, and the US 2/53 strip carries the chain dining that comes with any highway approach. What the neighborhood does not have is a destination restaurant or a cafe scene.

North of here, Superior's real food and drink is concentrated downtown and at the top of Tower. The Anchor Bar at 413 Tower Avenue is the institution, run by the Anderson family since 1977, serving cheap generously built burgers and fresh-cut fries under a ceiling of maritime salvage. Thirsty Pagan Brewing at 1615 Winter Street does hand-stretched pizza and house beer in the 1908 Soo Line Freight Depot. Earth Rider Brewery at 1617 North 3rd Street and its Cedar Lounge taproom, in a 1912 building billed as the longest continually operating tavern in the Twin Ports, anchor the music and beer scene. Hammond Steak House at 1402 North 5th Street carries the Wisconsin supper club tradition, which is worth experiencing at least once if you have moved from Minnesota.

For range and fine dining, downtown Duluth and Canal Park are about fifteen minutes over the bridges.
