South End (South Superior)

The quiet half of Superior: postwar houses, big yards, and the cheapest space per dollar in the metro.

The South End is where Superior keeps its ordinary houses, and that is meant as a compliment. Postwar ranches and Cape Cods on wide flat lots, quiet streets well back from the port, the 4,400-acre Municipal Forest on the western flank, and the city's best big-box errand access minutes away. It was a separately incorporated village until 1889 and still feels like its own town. For a normal family house in the Twin Ports at the lowest price, this is the answer.

The South End runs south along Tower Avenue from roughly Belknap Street toward the city's southern limits, on flat ground that rises very gently away from the harbor. It is the part of Superior that filled in latest and furthest from the docks, and that timing shaped everything about it: bigger lots, plainer houses, more ...

The South End is one of the three towns that became Superior. After the collapse of the first speculative boom in the 1870s, the 1880s brought a genuine revival driven by renewed rail development and grain shipping, and that revival produced three distinct settlements around the bay: the original Superior on the east side, West ...

The South End feels like an ordinary American postwar neighborhood, which in the Twin Ports is unusual enough to be distinctive. Wide streets, mowed lawns, garages, boats and campers parked beside houses, basketball hoops. Nothing performs.

The honest take

Is South End (South Superior) right for you?

You'll love it if

  • The most conventional family housing in Superior: postwar single-family homes on real lots, at or below a citywide median of about $214,000.
  • Big yards. Lots here are wider and deeper than the older harbor-side neighborhoods, and some southern blocks run to half an acre or more.
  • Quiet. Far enough from the port and rail that the industrial soundtrack largely drops away.
  • Best errand access in the city, with the US 2/53 big-box strip minutes away and Belknap to the north.
  • The Superior Municipal Forest, 4,400 acres and the third largest municipal forest in the nation, is on the western flank.
  • Closest Superior neighborhood to Pattison and Amnicon Falls state parks, and the easiest jumping-off point for inland Douglas County.

Look elsewhere if

  • Low walkability. This is a car neighborhood, and the commercial strip is a highway strip rather than a main street.
  • No lake or river frontage and no view. You are on flat inland ground.
  • Nightlife and dining inside the neighborhood are limited to taverns; the breweries and restaurants are ten to twelve minutes north.
  • Housing is mostly mid-century and plain. There is very little architectural interest compared with Central Park.
  • Jurisdiction confusion is a real risk here. Listings described as South Superior may sit in the Village or Town of Superior rather than the city, with different taxes, services, and sometimes utilities.
  • Wet basements remain common despite the distance from the harbor, and some outlying parcels are on well and septic.

Questions

Common questions about South End (South Superior)

What is the difference between South Superior, the Village of Superior, and the Town of Superior?

South Superior, also called the South End, is a neighborhood inside the City of Superior. The Village of Superior and the Town of Superior are two entirely separate governments lying south and southeast of the city line, and they share the 54880 ZIP code with the city. Tax rates, municipal services, utilities, and sometimes school assignment differ between the three. If a listing is described as South Superior, confirm with Douglas County which jurisdiction the parcel is actually in before you make an offer.

How much do homes cost in the South End?

Redfin does not publish a separate median for the neighborhood. Citywide, Superior's median sale price was about $214,000 in July 2026, up 4.4% year over year, and the South End generally trades at or modestly below that. For comparison, Central Superior listed near $249,900 and Billings Park near $234,950 (Redfin, accessed 2026-08-13). What the South End offers at that price is more lot and a newer, plainer house than the historic neighborhoods.

Is the South End good for families?

It is one of the two best neighborhoods in Superior for conventional family housing, alongside Billings Park. The appeal is straightforward: postwar single-family homes on wide, flat lots with real yards, quiet streets well away from the port and rail noise, and the best errand access in the city on the US 2/53 strip. The trade is walkability, since almost nothing here is reachable on foot, and architectural character, since the housing is mid-century and plain.

Was South Superior once its own town?

Yes. The 1880s revival in rail and grain shipping produced three distinct settlements at the head of the bay: the original Superior on the east, West Superior around the present downtown, and South Superior along Tower Avenue. West and South Superior were separately incorporated as villages before all three consolidated into a single city charter on March 25, 1889. The South End still reads as its own place, and its commercial strip on Tower is the remnant of that village main street.

What is there to do near the South End?

The Superior Municipal Forest is on the western flank: 4,400 acres inside the city limits, the third largest municipal forest in the nation, with hiking, mountain biking, paddling on the Pokegama, and groomed Nordic skiing. Nemadji Golf Course is a 36-hole public facility nearby. And the South End is the closest Superior neighborhood to Pattison State Park, with Wisconsin's tallest waterfall about 13 miles south, and Amnicon Falls about 10 miles east.

Do I need to worry about wet basements in the South End?

Yes, though less than in the harbor-side neighborhoods. Superior sits on sand and clay with a generally high water table, and while the South End is further from the water and slightly higher, basement moisture, drain tile condition, and sump performance are still among the most common inspection findings here. Check them on every property. On outlying parcels toward the city edge, also confirm whether the property is on municipal water and sewer or on a private well and septic system.
