The South End's recreation case is built on the Municipal Forest, and it is a strong one.
The Superior Municipal Forest covers roughly 4,400 acres inside the city limits, one of the largest municipally owned forests in the United States, wrapped around the Pokegama River and the estuary on the city's west side. From the South End it is the nearest large green space, carrying hiking, mountain biking, paddling access, and groomed classic and skate ski trails in winter (City of Superior, accessed 2026-08-13). Very few American neighborhoods have that much forest within a few minutes' drive, and it is under-visited even by local standards.
Nemadji Golf Course adds 36 holes of public golf across two four-star rated courses, run by KemperSports and repeatedly named the Duluth News Tribune's best golf course in the region.
Beyond the city, the South End is the natural jumping-off point for inland Douglas County. Pattison State Park is about 13 miles south on WI 35 and holds Big Manitou Falls, the highest waterfall in Wisconsin, with a swimming beach, campground, and trail network. Amnicon Falls State Park is about 10 miles east, with sandstone falls and rapids and a rare covered bowstring bridge over the gorge. Both are Wisconsin state parks requiring a vehicle admission sticker, and both are meaningfully less crowded than the Minnesota North Shore equivalents.
For water and the lake, Billings Park is about ten minutes northwest with St. Louis Bay shoreline and a boat launch, and Barker's Island and the Osaugie Trail are about ten minutes north. In winter, the Superior Ice Arena and the city's outdoor rinks handle skating, and the Tri-County Corridor carries snowmobile traffic west.
