Parks & recreation in Billings Park (Superior), Wisconsin

This is the strongest recreation section of any Superior neighborhood, and the reason is that both of the city's best outdoor assets are here.

Billings Park itself sits on the St. Louis Bay shoreline with walking trails, a pavilion, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a boat launch, on land donated to the city by Frederick Billings. For a neighborhood park it is unusually substantial, and it functions as the community's front yard: this is where the neighborhood walks, where kids play, and where boats go in.

The Superior Municipal Forest is the larger story. Roughly 4,400 acres inside the city limits, one of the largest municipally owned forests in the United States, wrapped around the Pokegama River and the St. Louis estuary, with its primary trailhead access off Billings Drive at this neighborhood's edge (City of Superior, accessed 2026-08-13). The terrain is flat boreal forest and wetland rather than the gorge country across the river, which makes it excellent for everyday use: hiking, mountain biking, paddling access, and groomed classic and skate ski trails through the winter. It is genuinely under-visited, which for residents is a feature.

The river itself is the third asset and the most complicated one. The St. Louis River estuary is the largest freshwater estuary on the Great Lakes and has been the subject of a decades-long binational cleanup as a Great Lakes Area of Concern, work that has been reopening habitat and public access along both shores. The St. Louis River Alliance and the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve both run public programming and volunteer stewardship days here, and for a household that wants to be involved in something local, that is the most direct route in the city.

Further afield, Barker's Island and the Osaugie Trail are about ten minutes east, Wisconsin Point about twenty, and Pattison State Park with Wisconsin's tallest waterfall about thirteen miles south.

Winter: Nordic skiing in the Superior Municipal Forest, snowshoeing at Billings Park, city outdoor rinks and warming sheds, Superior Ice Arena, snowmobiling on the Tri-County Corridor.
