Central Park's own green space is modest, and the neighborhood's recreation case rests on what is a few minutes away in every direction.
North and east along the bay, Barker's Island is the everyday waterfront: the Inner Beach with about 1,400 feet of shoreline, the marina, boat launches, the SS Meteor, and the eastern reach of the Osaugie Trail, five flat paved car-free miles along Superior Bay. From most Central Park addresses that is a short ride rather than a drive, and the flat ground makes it a realistic family outing on bicycles.
Fifteen minutes east, Wisconsin Point is a 229-acre park on one of the world's longest freshwater sandbars, with about 2.75 acres of developed beach and some of the best migratory birding in the western Great Lakes. Fifteen minutes west, the Superior Municipal Forest covers roughly 4,400 acres inside the city limits, the third largest municipal forest in the nation, with hiking, mountain biking, paddling, and groomed Nordic skiing. Billings Park gives St. Louis Bay shoreline at the far west end.
Closer to home, the Superior Ice Arena at 1015 Oakes Avenue handles indoor skating and hockey, and the city runs outdoor rinks with warming sheds across its neighborhoods through the winter. Nemadji Golf Course, a 36-hole facility at 5 North 58th Street East run by KemperSports with two four-star rated courses, is the region's best public golf and about ten minutes east.
The gap is a neighborhood park with real facilities inside Central Park itself. For a playground or a ballfield, families here use the school grounds and the city's other parks.
