Getting around South End (South Superior), Wisconsin

The South End is a car neighborhood with excellent car access. Downtown Superior is about seven minutes up Tower Avenue, downtown Duluth about fifteen over the bridges, the Miller Hill corridor about twenty, and the Duluth International Airport about twenty-four. US 2, US 53, and WI 35 all pass along or through the neighborhood, so regional highway access is immediate, and the drive south into inland Wisconsin is the easiest from anywhere in the metro.

Transit coverage is thinner than in the northern neighborhoods. The Duluth Transit Authority serves Superior with Route 110 between the Duluth Transit Center and Tower Avenue, the Route 111 Superior Circulator, and Route 211 through Billings Park and the East End, but how far south along Tower service actually extends should be confirmed directly.

Cycling within the neighborhood is easy and pleasant: flat ground, wide quiet residential streets, low traffic. Getting out of the neighborhood by bicycle is the weak point, since the Osaugie Trail is about ten minutes north and US 2/53 is not a road to ride. Off-road riders have the Municipal Forest on the western flank, which partly compensates.

Winter driving, honestly. This is among the easiest winter neighborhoods in the metro. It is flat, the streets are wide, the arterials clear early, and Superior generally receives less lake-effect snow than Duluth's east-side hillside because the heaviest bands are steered onto the Minnesota shore (NWS Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). The genuine seasonal hazards here are blowing and drifting snow across the open flat ground on the southern edge, and bridge ice on the Blatnik and Bong if your commute crosses to Duluth.

Major roads: Tower Avenue, US 2, US 53, WI 35, Belknap Street, Hammond Avenue.

DTA bus routes: 110 (Duluth Transit Center to Superior, Tower Avenue), 111 (Superior Circulator). Routes and timetables change, so confirm with the DTA.

Biking: Flat ground and quiet residential streets make local riding easy, and the Municipal Forest trail network is on the western flank for off-road. The limitation is connection: the Osaugie Trail is about ten minutes north, and US 2/53 is not a pleasant ride. Local riding is good; getting out of the neighborhood by bicycle is less so.

The hill: Flat, on sand and clay slightly above the harbor plain, rising very gently as you move south away from the water. No grades of any consequence, which makes this among the easiest ground in the Twin Ports for driveways, garages, additions, and accessible entries. Measurement supports the southward rise: six USGS spot elevations across the City of Superior span only about 30 feet, from 648 to 678, and the highest of the six is the southernmost (USGS Elevation Point Query Service, 2026-08-14). That is a city-wide range rather than a reading inside these boundaries, so treat it as the band this neighborhood sits within, at the upper end of it, rather than an exact figure.
