About The Anchor Bar
The Anchor Bar at 413 Tower Avenue is the single most-recommended place to eat in Superior, and it has held that position for decades without changing much of anything.
Tom Anderson bought it in 1977, when it was still a drinking establishment for the longshoremen and dock workers of Superior's north end, and his sons Adam and Aaron run it now. Food arrived in the early 1980s as soup and sandwiches, then somebody bought a griddle, and the hamburgers that made its name followed. The room is hung floor to ceiling with maritime salvage, including a life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Portions are generous, prices are well below what anyone expects, and the crowd is a genuine mix of Superior locals, Duluth people who crossed the bridge on purpose, and travelers who were told to stop. It has been featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. It is the clearest single expression of what Superior is: unpretentious, cheap, and better than its reputation.
