North End (Superior)

Restaurants & dining in North End (Superior), Wisconsin

Part of the North End (Superior) neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

The North End punches far above its weight, and it is the only residential neighborhood in Superior where the dining and drinking are inside the neighborhood rather than a drive away.

Earth Rider Brewery at 1617 North 3rd Street is the anchor, brewing with Lake Superior water in roughly 16,000 square feet of the former Leamon Mercantile warehouse, with outdoor festival grounds and a live music calendar. Its taproom is the Cedar Lounge, across the festival grounds, in a building put up in 1912 for the Northern Brewing Company and billed as the longest continually operating tavern in the Twin Ports. It is one of the better small live-music rooms in the region, and it is walkable from a lot of North End addresses.

Thirsty Pagan Brewing is a block east at 1615 Winter Street in the 1908 Soo Line Freight Depot, doing hand-stretched pizza, house beer, sandwiches, and seasonal salads, and it is the default group dinner in Superior.

The Anchor Bar at 413 Tower Avenue is the institution, and its history is the neighborhood's: a longshoremen's bar that added soup and sandwiches in the early 1980s, then a griddle, then the burgers that made its name, run by the Anderson family since 1977 under a ceiling of maritime salvage that includes a life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald. Hammond Steak House at 1402 North 5th Street carries the Wisconsin supper club tradition inside the neighborhood.

What the North End does not have is daytime dining, a cafe scene, or cuisine variety. Breakfast and lunch mean going elsewhere.
