Downtown Superior

Restaurants & dining in Downtown Superior, Wisconsin

Part of the Downtown Superior neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

For a district this size, downtown Superior eats and drinks well above its weight, and almost all of the energy is at the north end of Tower Avenue.

Earth Rider Brewery at 1617 North 3rd Street is the anchor, brewing with Lake Superior water in the former Leamon Mercantile warehouse and running an outdoor festival grounds and music calendar. Its taproom is the Cedar Lounge, a block west across the grounds, in a building put up in 1912 for the Northern Brewing Company and billed as the longest continually operating tavern in the Twin Ports. It is one of the better small live-music rooms in the region. Thirsty Pagan Brewing is a block east at 1615 Winter Street in the 1908 Soo Line Freight Depot, doing hand-stretched pizza and house beer, and it is the default group dinner in the city.

The Anchor Bar at 413 Tower Avenue is the institution and the recommendation everyone in the Twin Ports gives: cheap, generously built burgers and fresh-cut fries in a room hung with maritime salvage, run by the Anderson family since 1977. Hammond Steak House at 1402 North 5th Street carries the Wisconsin supper club tradition a few blocks off the core.

What downtown does not have is daytime dining density, a bakery scene, or much cuisine variety, and hours skew toward evening. For range, downtown Duluth and Canal Park are twelve minutes over the bridge, which is how most people here treat it.
