Fairmount has essentially no dining of its own, beyond whatever is currently operating along the Grand Avenue frontage.
The practical answer is Spirit Valley, about five minutes northeast, which carries the everyday west-side restaurants on a walkable main street and is where most residents go.
For something better, the Lincoln Park Craft District is twelve to thirteen minutes northeast and is worth the drive: Duluth Grill for scratch cooking, OMC Smokehouse for barbecue with a patio, Bent Paddle Brewing and Ursa Minor for taprooms. Toward Proctor, Gronk's Grill and Bar covers the neighborhood-bar slot.
Downtown and Canal Park are about fifteen minutes for the full range.
The honest framing: this is a neighborhood where eating out is a planned drive rather than a walk, and nothing about the zoo changes that. If you cook and treat a restaurant meal as a deliberate outing, the distances are manageable.
