Fairmount

Who lives in Fairmount, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Fairmount neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Fairmount is a small, owner-majority working neighborhood. The tract it shares with three West Duluth neighbors reports 71.5% owner-occupancy, 28.5% renters and a $764 median rent (ACS 5-year 2023 estimates, accessed 2026-08-13), though that tract covers far more ground than Fairmount itself.

The most visible household types are long-tenured owners in small postwar and pre-war houses, and first-time buyers for whom this is one of the most achievable entry points in the city. Families with young children are drawn by the zoo and the creek corridors more than by anything else.

Households are car-dependent for everything except the zoo and the dog park. Commute patterns lean toward the west side, the Miller Hill corridor and downtown, with a meaningful share working in Proctor and the western industrial corridor.
