Fairmount

Getting around Fairmount, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Fairmount neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Fairmount is a car neighborhood on a good road.

Drive times run about fifteen minutes to downtown, fourteen to the Miller Hill corridor, seventeen to the airport and sixteen to Superior. Grand Avenue is the spine and connects northeast to Interstate 35 through West Duluth and southwest toward Spirit Mountain and the far west neighborhoods.

Transit runs the Grand Avenue corridor and needs confirming after the 2023 DTA systemwide redesign.

Cycling is a mixed picture. The Munger Trail's trailhead minutes southwest is one of the best car-free riding assets in the city, and the Cross City Trail runs northeast. Grand Avenue itself is an arterial and not a comfortable route to ride on, so the useful riding starts once you are off it.

Winter driving is easier here than in most of Duluth. Duluth averages 90.2 inches of snow a season on the 1991 to 2020 normals (NWS Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13), and the west end generally sees less lake-effect than the eastern shoreline. Fairmount sits on relatively flat corridor ground rather than a hillside, so grades are not the problem they are elsewhere, and Grand Avenue is cleared early because it is an arterial. Residential streets follow.

Biking: The Munger Trail's Norton Park trailhead is minutes southwest, giving 70 paved car-free miles, and the Cross City Trail runs northeast. Grand Avenue itself is an arterial and not a comfortable riding route. Spirit Mountain's singletrack is six minutes away.
