Fairmount reads as a small neighborhood organised around a road and a fence line. Grand Avenue carries traffic through the middle, the zoo occupies a substantial block of it, and the residential streets sit behind and above.
The texture divides sharply. Along the arterial, the feel is transitional: scattered commercial frontage, traffic, and houses that face a busy road. A street or two back, it is an ordinary quiet West Duluth neighborhood of small houses and mature trees.
The creek corridors give the edges a wooded character that the middle lacks, and the dog park at the Keene Creek edge is one of the few places in the neighborhood where people gather without a reason.
A Saturday here is the zoo if you have children, the dog park if you have a dog, Spirit Mountain in winter, and errands five minutes northeast in Spirit Valley. There is nothing to walk to for coffee, and no gathering place beyond the park edges.
What Fairmount has that its neighbors do not is a destination inside it. People come here on purpose, which is unusual for a West Duluth neighborhood, even if they come for the animals rather than the streets.
Landmarks
Duluth's zoo, at 72nd Avenue West and Grand Avenue, sits inside the neighborhood and is the reason most Duluthians know Fairmount's name. Kingsbury Creek runs through the grounds.
The off-leash dog park at the neighborhood's eastern edge along the Keene Creek corridor.
The creek that runs through the zoo grounds and down toward the river. It flooded severely in June 2012, which is part of the neighborhood's recent memory and belongs on a buyer's due-diligence list.
