Norton Park feels like a small town attached to a trailhead. It is compact, quiet on the interior streets, and busier than you would expect along Grand Avenue and at 75th Avenue West on a summer weekend, when the trail parking fills.
The texture splits the way it does in every arterial neighborhood: frontage on Grand Avenue is exposed and trafficked, and two streets back it is ordinary and residential.
What distinguishes it is a sense of self-maintenance. A neighborhood that has kept its own community park going is a neighborhood where people know each other, and that shows.
A Saturday is the trail, the hill, or the river. In summer that means riding south on the Munger or east on the Western Waterfront, the bike park at Spirit Mountain, or the campground and boat access at Indian Point. In winter it means Spirit Mountain, Nordic trails, and snowmobiles on the Munger corridor. Errands are seven minutes northeast in Spirit Valley.
What is missing is commerce. There is no cafe, no store and no gathering place beyond the community center and the trailhead itself.
Landmarks
The 70-mile paved rail trail to Hinckley begins in this neighborhood at 75th Avenue West near Grand Avenue, alongside the start of the Western Waterfront Trail. It is the most significant thing in Norton Park and one of the better trailheads in Minnesota.
The community building put up in 1965, constructed of steel supplied by the Duluth Steel Building Company. The grounds are among the last community parks in the city maintained by neighborhood residents rather than by the city.
