Morgan Park

Parks & recreation in Morgan Park, Duluth, Minnesota

Part of the Morgan Park neighborhood guide. Back to the full guide.

Morgan Park's outdoor access is river-oriented rather than lake-oriented, and it is better than the neighborhood's isolation suggests.

The St. Louis River runs along the southern edge. This is the estuary rather than the lake: a large, complex, ecologically significant system that has been the subject of decades of restoration work, much of it coordinated through the St. Louis River Alliance. For paddlers and birders it is a genuine asset, and it is the reason this end of Duluth feels connected to water in a completely different way from the Lake Superior shoreline neighborhoods.

Jay Cooke State Park is about fifteen minutes southwest, holding the St. Louis River gorge, the swinging bridge, and the southern end of the Superior Hiking Trail. It is one of the better state parks in Minnesota and it is effectively this neighborhood's back yard.

For trails, the Mission Creek end of the Duluth Traverse carries the network's smooth flow lines, in contrast to the technical riding at Piedmont, and the Willard Munger State Trail gives paved, car-free miles running south. Spirit Mountain, with lift-served skiing and downhill mountain biking, is about ten minutes northeast.

What Morgan Park does not have is a neighborhood park of consequence or Lake Superior access. The company town's own recreational buildings are a historical matter rather than a current amenity.

Winter: downhill skiing at Spirit Mountain, cross-country skiing at Jay Cooke, snowmobiling, sledding, outdoor rinks.
