Local lore in Morgan Park, Duluth, Minnesota

• The houses are concrete. US Steel manufactured the block on site and built almost the entire town out of it, which is why Morgan Park looks like nowhere else in Minnesota.
• It was going to be called Model City. The name was changed during development to honor J.P. Morgan, the financier behind US Steel.
• The company did everything. US Steel handled trash, lawn care, snow removal, health care, policing, and fire protection, and rented the houses only to its own employees.
• When it opened, Morgan Park's school, hospital, and community center were described as the most up-to-date in the nation.
• The neighborhood's population was restricted by company policy in its early years, which is why the adjacent Gary-New Duluth grew as it did.
• The mill closed and the town stayed. Morgan Park is now a neighborhood of privately owned concrete houses arranged according to a corporate plan from 1913.
