This is what you buy Fond du Lac for, and by any honest measure it is the best outdoor access in the city.
Chambers Grove Park is the neighborhood's own, at 13404 Highway 23 on the St. Louis River. It carries pavilions available for rental, a playground, picnic areas and grills, restrooms, a parking lot, a public orchard, river fishing, and a half-mile interpretive trail added during the post-flood rebuild that covers area history, riparian habitat, and flood recovery (City of Duluth, accessed 2026-08-13). It is also the site's historical center, the ground where the fur post, the townsite, and the excursion-boat picnic era all happened in sequence.
Jay Cooke State Park is four miles upstream, and calling it a back yard is not much of an exaggeration. The St. Louis River gorge, the swinging bridge, the camping, the winter Nordic trails, and the southern reach of the Superior Hiking Trail are all there. It is one of the better state parks in Minnesota and it is closer to this address than a grocery store is.
Beyond the park boundary, the Fond du Lac State Forest spreads west and south, which puts forest roads, hunting ground, and snowmobile corridors within a few minutes. The Mission Creek trails northeast are the far-west end of the Duluth Traverse, carrying the network's smooth flow lines rather than the technical riding at Piedmont. And the Waabizheshikana river corridor trail, named to honor the Marten Clan and routed near historic Ojibwe portages along the estuary, is being built out downstream (Lake Superior NERR, accessed 2026-08-13).
The river here is between the gorge and the estuary, excellent for paddling and fishing and genuinely dangerous in spring melt. What the neighborhood does not have is anything organized: no ball fields, no rink, and no youth sports based here.
Winter: snowmobiling on the Munger corridor and forest roads, Nordic skiing at Jay Cooke, fat biking on the Mission Creek trails, downhill skiing at Spirit Mountain and at Mont du Lac across the river, ice fishing.
